You've decided that you want to be a writer. You've got the pens. You've got the paper. You've got the steaming cup of coffee. You even have the new writing desk and ergonomically correct, great back support chair that keeps you right in the perfect position to write for hours.
But the words don't come. That blank page is staring at you, accusing you of being a pretender. The pen begins to feel heavy and if you don't put it down, your arm will break with its weight.
What comes next? Well, how bad do you want it? If you are serious about becoming a writer, here are a few tips that could help you over come the dreaded writer's block.
#1. Put the pen down and walk away. Staring at the blank sheet won't get the creative juices flowing. That just puts another brick in the wall. Take a walk, even if it's just around the room. Get your head moving (figuratively) and start thinking about what you would like to writer about. Work around a few ideas, then go back to the page and see what happens. Doodle, or jot down some ideas, or start writing.
#2. Watch some television. Don't steal ideas, but use the boob tube as a means to get your creative juices flowing. Take a concept or simple idea and mold it into your own. Watch commercials and programs with a broad perspective to take in as much as possible. Then, when you start writing, narrow in on the aspects that you want to focus on.
#3. Turn on the radio. Listen in much the same way as the above example with the television. How could you take a story from a song and mold it into something more. Use it as a jumping off point, or as a transition to another part of your story. I find country music, with its story base, usually works well for this.
#4. Take a nap. I get a lot of really great ideas(at least I think they are great) when I'm asleep. Keep the pen and paper close at hand though. These Ideas can slip away pretty quick when you wake up.
These are a few ideas that help me. Everyone is different, but I hope these ideas might give you a few ideas to help you overcome the dreaded Writer's Block. Feel free to leave comments with ideas that help you.
